Letter of Standing

If you are a Provincial Dental Board Licensee and are moving to another province or country, you will often be asked to provide a Letter of Standing.

  A request for a “Letter of Standing” suggests that a licensee may be giving up their license in Nova Scotia . When a dentist either relinquishes his / her license or does not intend to renew his / her license, several things must be kept in mind.

  1. It is necessary that the Dental Board be advised, in writing, of the intended action.  The individual is then placed in an inactive file as opposed to being struck from the Register for non-payment of fees.
  2. The three year Continuing Dental Education cycle is interrupted and upon relicensure, the cycle is extended to include the unexpired term.
  3. The Nova Scotia Dental Association (NSDA) must also be advised, in writing to ensure that all membership obligations are honored.

Please keep in mind that a Letter of Standing can take up to 2 weeks to process.  Please do not wait until the last minute to make this request. If you have questions about getting a Letter of Standing, contact the Board office at:

phone: 902-420-0083

Should one apply for relicensure in the future, qualifications, as outlined in Regulation No. 1 must be met; among others this includes;

  1. Verification of 450 clinical hours of practice in the immediately preceding three year period.
  1. Verification of active membership in the Nova Scotia Dental Association.
  1. Verification of Malpractice insurance (minimum $ 3 million).
  1. Letter of Standing from the previous jurisdiction last licensed.
  1. Payment of the current year’s license fees.

If further information is required please contact the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia.
